Painter and amateur photographer. Allport appears to have made the first photographic expedition to the Lake St Clair region in Tasmania, exhibiting the stereoscopic photographs he took at the 1862-63 Hobart Town Art Treasures and Industries Exhibition.
Although his naive images suggest that he was more at ease with his quill than with a brush, Gardner's sketches of landscapes, Aboriginal customs, weapons and implements, early station buildings and aspects of pioneer squatting life are valued for their historical insight.
