Ruby Margaret Shannon

woodcarver and composer, was born in East Maitland (NSW) on 11 March 1883, youngest of the four girls among the 11 children of Margaret, née Young, and John Shannon. Ruby was educated at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School in the early 1920s. She married Major T. McLeod, a Brisbane barrister. Ruby Shannon composed watzes, eg The Normanby Waltz written for the Normanby Picnic Races at Saltbush and The Midnight Waltz. She was also interested in woodcarving. For instance, she carved the pulpit in St Luke's Church of England, Toowoomba, given by the family in memory of their mother, Margaret (died 1916). Ruby died in April 1923; there were no children of the marriage.
