Byrne was a steel fabricator, later designing and manufacturing the B & D Roll-a-Door in partnership with Paul Davidson. The Roll-a-Door was originally designed by Ben Saul who sold the design to Byrne. The door sold locally, then began selling internationally in the 1960s. In 1985, the business was sold to Clyde Industries.
