Muttaburra born artist, writer, curator, educator and academic lives and works in Brisbane.
Completed Diploma of Creative Arts (Painting Major/Literature Minor), Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education, Toowoomba(1978-80). Studied Diploma of Arts (Photography Major),Queensland College of Art (1983-84). Involvement in 80s ARI scene was as part of a group of young artists in pre-Fitzgerald Queensland who chose to stay—rather than leave—to create visual arts infrastructure in Brisbane.This collaborative activity manifested in the strategic management of artist-run initiatives and spaces, in particular, the creation of That Space, the Queensland Artworkers Alliance and eyeline Magazine. Jay—alongside collaborators Lehan Ramsay and Paul Andrew—undertook AXIS Art Projects “Does New York Exist?”, living and researching in NYC for two months in 1988.
Prior to full time lecturing in Photography at QCA in 1989, Jay taught short courses in painting, printmaking, and photography for TAFE, Brisbane School of Art, Activities (University of Qld Union), Queensland Film and Drama Centre (Griffith University) and lectured part time at QCA in Photography.
