Appleby was a New Zealand photographer who trained with Falk Studios in Sydney and in Newcastle before partnering with Emma Manning in the Christchurch studio of her late husband CH Manning. He exhibited bi-chromate prints with the NSW Society of Artists in 1907. Appleby's work is now in the collection of the Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales, Sydney.
while Appleby appears listed on a headstone of his wife Violet in Melbourne General Cemetery the family notices in the Sydney Morning Herald of 11 June, p.10, and 12 June 1951, p 16, has his death at Sydney Hospital on 10 June and the funeral in Crown Street Sydney and cremation at Northern Suburbs Crematorium on 12 June. He left a widow Violet and children Mrs Kura MacDermott, Paul with a dughter Helen deceased.
