Painter, author, patron, philanthropist. After World War I he travelled to Europe and studied art where his abstract compositions reflect a life of leisure and 1920s modernity. His most prolific period spans the late 1920s to early 1930s. Power his estate to the University of Sydney to establish the Power Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Sydney that led to the creation of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.

Description

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of J.W. Power’s Bequest to the University of Sydney, a recreation of his 1934 Paris solo exhibition with the Abstraction Création group was hald at the University of Sydney art gallery.

Description

In 2007 the NGA acquired James Agapitos OAM, and Ray Wilson OAM, collection of Australian Surrealist art. Drawn from this collection this exhibition showed the breadth of Surrealist practice in this country from the 1920s to the 1950s.
