Biography

Dr Catherine Fisher studied art under Tibor Cybonyi in the 1960s and has worked as a visual artist since 1974. She studied Graphic Design in the 1970s (as one of the SCA first design intakes) and in the 1980s completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Vis. Arts) majoring in Photography and Jewellery / Silversmithing (under Helge Larsen), and Grad. Dip. Ed. from Sydney University. In 1993 she completed a Master of Education (Creative Arts) from the University of NSW and a Bachelor of Laws and Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice from the University of Wollongong in the late 1990s. Her three-year research doctorate (DCA) from the University of Southern Queensland on Postdigitalism and humanness was completed in 2019.

She is a Visual Artists Educator, Photographer, Curator, Researcher and Lawyer. With over forty years of experience in the arts, she has produced peer-reviewed academic treatises & publications on arts, law and education. She is a national award-winning photographer and gem facetor. Other practices include fibre arts; enamelling and lapidary.

Solicitor & Barrister of NSW Supreme Court, Dr. Fisher is a legal author and researcher of many Arts/Artist- related publications & Technical Advisor To ATO; Public Rulings Board; Commonwealth Ministers/Parliamentary Senate Estimates Committees.

Her motivations for research, exegetical components and exhibited works focus on the dynamics and interactions of Postdigitalism and humanness. Visual Arts, Printmaking, Photography, Egyptology, Jewellery, Fibre arts, Art history, Law & Education are practised and researched. Each area has played a significant role in shaping her art/work experiences and persona.

Catherine also has an interest in human rights/arts law, and how they relate to the pursuit and processes of art. (e.g. Freedom of expression; censorship, and child exploitation in art processes). She investigates political aspects of visual arts and the differing forms and needs of art expression throughout history – E.g. Historical censorship of art forms, graffiti, beauty and the sublime – contemporary thought versus ancient tradition.

She has a private studio and lab in Sydney.
