Sydney Architecture 1975-2000

Many Sydney architects gradually lost interest in designing 'nuts and berries’ buildings (expressinng earthy materials and Wright’s organic principles) after Glenn Murcutt completed his first steel and glass house in 1975. During the booming 1980s and 1990s, modern steel and glass architecture was prevalent for new buildings, along with a 'post-modern’ trend to 'quote’ aesthetic features from European classical and Australian historic architecture. During the last quarter of the 20th century, colour was an important theme for many Sydney architects: who painted walls either white (in a widespread revival of Scandinavian minimalism) or bright colours (inspired by Mexican modernist Luis Barragan). There was also a community movement to preserve historic structures threatened by major city projects.
