Joy Engelman is a regionally based artist with over 50 years of experience in teaching, practising and exhibiting in the visual arts. With many solo and selected group exhibitions behind her, Engelman has received over 20 awards for both her artwork and her commitment to the arts community. She has recently been awarded the Lorenzo il Magnifico Award for Painting (5th Primo), a Medici Medal for Art at the 2007 Florence Biennale in Italy. This is the highlight of her career to date.

Engelman’s work is represented in many overseas and national collections and she is included in several anthologies. She has developed and co-ordinated several public arts projects as well as mentoring other artists. Recent years have been spent in developing and building web, computer graphic skills and the print media with less emphasis on exhibiting. Engelman now combines these skills and is developing her international network with the intention of strengthening the presence and recognition of Australian regional artists overseas.

Current works are explorations of outback Australia from an aerial perspective mapping the terrain and waterways. A focus on Climate Change and how it is written in the landscape continues to be a theme during 2007/08. Having traveled extensively throughout the desert regions, Engelman is very familiar with the colours, textures and patterns of these areas. Of European descent, but born in Australia, she continues to explore and be inspired by this sacred place.
